Ooh, Baby. Things are a-changing around here.

I’ll just get right to it: I’m going to have a baby.

That’s right. In about two months’ time, a mini-Mari will make her way into this world.

I didn’t want to say anything for a while; I wanted to keep this blog focused on the inspiration for my cookie designs and my occasional thoughts (really silly thoughts) on my life as a writer. And I plan to keep it that way, too. However, as I make my way through the final trimester, I’m finding it harder to drum up the energy necessary to bake and decorate. And this heat wave that has kidnapped southern California has made the idea of firing up the oven even less appealing.

So, what’s going to happen in the cha no ma-ri? Well, I’m sure I’ll sneak a few cookies in here every now and then. I can’t help myself. But I’m taking this time to work on a few related projects that are physically less demanding, such as, recreating some of my designs in paintings and silkscreen designs. I thought some small painted versions of my beloved Blue Dachshund and Patch the Cat (also known as Master P.) would make for nice decorations on the wall next to the baby’s crib. I’ll post new creations here when they’re complete.

Obviously, for the time being, Monday Cookies will not be a regular feature here, but like I said, I’ll sneak in a few every now and then.

And now, a request: all you parents out there, if you have any great parenting advice, would you mind sharing it with me?

Congratulations, Mari! This is exciting and great news.

I am so excited for you and Wolf! Keep us posted on your progress and post pics of the nursery (I know it will be adorable). And you are right-things are a-changing (my sons are men now but I vaguely remember . . .).

Oh this is so exciting! (My parenting advice? When they start talking, take time to write down the words they say and mis-say. My children love hearing about their younger selves.) Otherwise, no advice — have fun, follow your instincts, and try to get lots of naps.

    Patricia, thanks! We are excited.

Rhonda, the nursery is going to be a corner of our study (we live in a tiny house). But I am excited about trying my hand at painting. I might ask you for some tips…

Lily, Napping is high on our priority list. Very high.

Mari, I would love to give you some tips on painting!

    OH MY GOSH ! ! ! ! ! !
That is wonderful news Mari! I have been so behind on visiting all of my favorite blogs since I got back from my trip that I haven’t been here in a while and look what a great surprise I have found when I finally did get here!!
Personally I don’t think you need any advice because you and Wolf seem like a great creative team that really knows how to work well together so you are steps ahead with that right there. but, just in case he forgets, make sure Wolf takes lots and lots of film of you three when baby gets does here! I remember those first three months after my son was born enduring all those endless nights of feedings and then poof! they were gone and he was a much bigger baby all at once and he started doing all these new things… The babyhood went by extremely fast. Iin fact, our son actually just turned 15 a couple if weeks ago.
    Congratulations to you both!

Rhonda, I am about to start on a painting. It already looks dreadful. I’ll show it soon. Hee.

Paz, Thanks! but you knew pretty much already…:)

Lily, Trust me, we NEED advice. I’m catching up with all the reading I’m supposed to have done months ago. I think we’ll probably arrive at the hospital only to hear the nurses and administrators say things like, “Did you bring this?” or “Do you want this?” and we’ll look at them like, “Uh, dunno. What is that?” But yeah, it’s exciting. As we get closer to the end of October, we’re starting to really feel that this is for real…And as for film, well, Wolf is a photographer, so if we are short of photos, I’ll just do what every good wife does: blame it on him!

Since I don’t have kids, I will have to give you the advice I would have given my mom and dad when I was a kid myself:
    1. Let your kid eat all the cookies she wants.
    2. Let your kid stay outside and play all night long if she wants to.
    3. Let your kid wear whatever she wants to wear.
    4. Don’t make your kid take piano lessons.
    5. Know that your kid knows best.
