Fig Thief is at it again.

by mischief mari on August 13, 2012

Every summer I wait for the neighbor’s fig tree to pop some yummies. This year, the tree has struggled a bit. While fig trees throughout our neighborhood have been producing what look like bushels of fruit, our neighbor’s tree has been kind of bare.

Until now. OMG. I almost can’t contain myself.

While they’re not looking I’ve been swiping these plump beauties. Look at them. Could you resist?

I plucked these for my lovely friend Lisa Horstman. She regularly posts about figs. Kind of.

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie…

collage photos sicily june july 2012

A few weeks ago we took our first vacation in a long time. To Sicily, Italy. Initially I was hesitant (hesitant? what are ya, mari, crazy?!? It’s Sicily, silly!) because traveling from Los Angeles to Europe with a very active, squirmy, stubborn and already opinionated two-and-a-half-year-old is no small undertaking. I was also in the middle of some very big projects at work that I felt shouldn’t be neglected for even a minute. And Sicily in late June, early July is hot, hot, hot.

But we went. And you know what? Taking a break is so very, very necessary. For me, being in a different environment takes me away from the stuff that’s bugging me, it reminds me that there is a world outside of my tiny little office, and having limited internet access (at times none!) was really refreshing. It was also a reminder of how much time I spend in front of a monitor. Too much. Most of all, seeing family and seeing mimi have so much fun playing with her cousins and other kids was a joy.

I’ve been ridiculously busy since the beginning of this year. After publishing my little book, the coolest cookies on the planet, I took the tiniest of breaks before launching my writing and design site. Business is chugging along and I have accumulated a nice group of clients including a textile designer, an audiobooks producer and a membership site for car enthusiasts. I’m really enjoying writing and designing but it’s incredibly detail-oriented work that’s very time-consuming. Which means, I’ve had little time leftover to bake. Sigh. But I have a few interesting occasions coming up that have inspired me…we’ll see what I come up with.

I hope you’re enjoying these summer days!

Is Spring nearly here?

March 5, 2012

Two days ago, I was sitting in our garden, about to read a book (make that a few sentences; mimi was with me, which means reading a full paragraph would have been a major accomplishment…), when the scent of jasmine wafted around me. Three days into March and the jasmine has already started to bloom?!? […]

Oh my, my, my. Meyer Lemon Cupcakes.

February 23, 2012

I saw this recipe a while ago on MattBites and bookmarked it. I had to because at the time I read the article, meyer lemons were already out of season. I had to wait until they returned, about a year later. Rough. I love lemons but meyer lemons are just so darn special. A tad […]

Happy Valentine’s Day.

February 13, 2012

Good grief. I’m becoming one of those moms. You know, the kind that makes stuff and bags it in cello bags with ribbons and tags for my kid’s school events. Although the daycare center where we send mimi three days a week said that participation in the annual Valentine’s Day exchange was optional, I felt […]

Happy Lunar New Year: The Year of the Dragon!

January 24, 2012

And Happy New Year. I know I’m a bit late on this one. As we headed into the year-end holidays, I caught that nasty cold that was going around. That thing grabbed me, clung to me and kept me in its evil grip for a good three weeks. It sapped all the energy out of […]

Happy Holidays, Goodbye 2011, Indian Style.

December 21, 2011

This will be my last post for 2011. Every other year we go to Norway to celebrate Christmas with Wolf’s family, but we decided that this year we’d stay in Southern California. Wolf took Mimi to Norway in September to be a part of his mother’s 70th birthday bash, and when he returned told me […]

Book Update: It’s here. the coolest cookies on the planet is here!!!

December 12, 2011

A few days ago, Wolf counted the number of pictures in our book, the coolest cookies on the planet. I feel silly because I can’t remember the number. But it was a lot more than I thought. Must be all the little shots in the tutorials sections that are boosting the count. Anyway. I’m pleased […]

Thanks, Santa Ana winds, for such a knockout.

December 6, 2011

Last Wednesday the Santa Ana (California) winds blew from the east knocking a lot of trees and power lines down. Wolf mentioned one report citing the winds racing through at 97 miles per hour. I’ve seen professional baseball pitchers hurl balls at that speed; so fast you don’t even see the ball. But at least […]
