Every summer I wait for the neighbor’s fig tree to pop some yummies. This year, the tree has struggled a bit. While fig trees throughout our neighborhood have been producing what look like bushels of fruit, our neighbor’s tree has been kind of bare.
Until now. OMG. I almost can’t contain myself.
While they’re not looking I’ve been swiping these plump beauties. Look at them. Could you resist?
I plucked these for my lovely friend Lisa Horstman. She regularly posts about figs. Kind of.

A few weeks ago we took our first vacation in a long time. To Sicily, Italy. Initially I was hesitant (hesitant? what are ya, mari, crazy?!? It’s Sicily, silly!) because traveling from Los Angeles to Europe with a very active, squirmy, stubborn and already opinionated two-and-a-half-year-old is no small undertaking. I was also in the middle of some very big projects at work that I felt shouldn’t be neglected for even a minute. And Sicily in late June, early July is hot, hot, hot.
But we went. And you know what? Taking a break is so very, very necessary. For me, being in a different environment takes me away from the stuff that’s bugging me, it reminds me that there is a world outside of my tiny little office, and having limited internet access (at times none!) was really refreshing. It was also a reminder of how much time I spend in front of a monitor. Too much. Most of all, seeing family and seeing mimi have so much fun playing with her cousins and other kids was a joy.
I’ve been ridiculously busy since the beginning of this year. After publishing my little book, the coolest cookies on the planet, I took the tiniest of breaks before launching my writing and design site. Business is chugging along and I have accumulated a nice group of clients including a textile designer, an audiobooks producer and a membership site for car enthusiasts. I’m really enjoying writing and designing but it’s incredibly detail-oriented work that’s very time-consuming. Which means, I’ve had little time leftover to bake. Sigh. But I have a few interesting occasions coming up that have inspired me…we’ll see what I come up with.
I hope you’re enjoying these summer days!
