Still Walking. With my very cool dog bag.
After a non-stress test last week, my doctor declared that I am officially full term and that if I go into labor in the coming week, then, I go into labor. I raced home and told Wolf, “I think we better put the crib together…” It’s up and just needs a mattress and sheets and we’re ready. Well, as ready as any new parents are. Which is not that ready at all, I’m sure.
Otherwise I’m still getting about as I always do, even walking our gigantic Nunuk in the mornings and evenings. Is it possible that he senses a change is about to happen? Maybe it’s because of his breed (Malamute-Shepherd mix), maybe it’s because he’s never been properly socialized with other dogs, maybe it’s because he’s a guy, I’m not sure. But he has always pulled hard, almost dragging me with him, when we take our walks. But these days, he’s not pulling as hard. He doesn’t go as crazy around squirrels, and he even seems a bit calmer around other dogs. Just a fraction.
I made the bag pictured here so that I’d have my hands free when walking him. A few people in the neighborhood asked where they could get one and were astonished that it was handmade. Goodness, the thing is so easy to make. I’m thinking of posting a pattern and tutorial for you here if you’re interested. In the meantime, I made four and put them up for sale in my Etsy shop. The great thing about this bag is that it’s washable, durable and keeps your hands free so that you can focus on your dog while walking. Also, if I might say so myself, it’s just a heck of a lot prettier than other bags out there. Each one is one-of-a-kind since I make these from leftover fabric.
My granny used to tell me, “Do your duty!” before we left the house. Well, with this bag, I feel I’m helping my dog do his duty properly, and doing my civic duty. After all, there’s nothing ickier than stepping in another pooch’s poop. I carry extra scoop bags in there, too, in case inconsiderate dog owners - ahem - forget to carry some on their walks.
Back with some cookies, soon, too.

Mari, you are so talented, 9 months pregnant, painting, sewing, nesting in general, baking! You are amazing. Great picture of you and your dog, you look so happy and relaxed (and love the purse). Keep us posted.
Wow, Mari, you look amazing! I can’t believe you are so far along! & I am so excited for you. Mini Mari can be here at any moment! Just remember to enjoy every moment and try and relax as much as possible. If anyone offers to do anything for you, accept it. You should be pampered as much as possible immediately after your precious daughters birth, especially the first month after your MM arrives, I think it is called the Golden month, have you ever heard of it?
I hope you’ve patented your doggy bags, they are beautiful. such a simple practical idea & I’ve never seen this done before either!
You really are so creative!
Now that is one relaxed-looking expectant mama! (And if you’re not, just pretend you are.) And still you’re making cookies, painting and thinking up additions to your etsy shop. That is going to be one VERY lucky baby to have you for a mom. xo
You both look terrific.
After I had my surgery (and wasn’t supposed to walk my dogs just yet), I walked my dogs. Normally, they pulled and acted all kinds of crazy but it seemed that they sensed that something had happened to me. They didn’t pull me at all. They were very patient with me, walked slowly and hardly barked at other -dogs or humans. I was so surprised! They really do sense (know) what’s going on.
I love the bag.
